A few dozen young women spent a week of their summer vacation learning some things that aren't traditionally associated with girls. Things such as changing a tire, soldering and engineering.
In association with a number of community partners including Build a Dream and the University of Windsor the GECDSB Student Success department staged camps at two sites, W.F. Herman Academy and Tecumseh Vista Academy. At Herman ten girls had five days of hands-on expereince in the construction, automotive, technical design and machining skilled trades. The students at Vista were immersed in E-STEAM Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Math.
At both sites the students worked with teachers and female mentors. They used machines and created things with their own hands and minds.
The project was funded through a Ministry of Education Experiential Learning Grant.
