"They Call Me George"

- author Cecil Foster to speak with students -

Journalist and author Cecil Foster's latest work of historical non-fiction "They Call Me George" recounts the stories of Black train porters during the railway age in Canada.

Through the generosity of the Probation Officers' Association of Ontario (POAO) select students from the GECDSB Change Your Future program at W.F. Herman Academy will participate in a webinar with Mr. Foster on Tuesday, October 27th from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

He will speak about his book, which raises awareness of race relations, human rights and the development of unions in Canada through the stories of the men (known as Pullmen) who served passengers on the country's rail lines.

Following his presentation, Mr. Foster will take questions from the students.

The GECDSB's partnership with the probation officers' association is part of the ongoing effort to raise awareness of Anti-Black racism. Chris Podolinsky, President of the POAO, says, "This is an important story and needs to be told. We are delighted to work with the GECDSB and look forward to hearing more from the Herman students."
