James L. Dunn Public School

- new school on Mercer Street -

The Board of Trustees of the Greater Essex County District School Board has selected James L. Dunn Public School as the name for the new school being built on Mercer Street in Windsor. It will replace the current Giles Campus French Immersion Public School, which is located in the former W.D. Lowe high school building.

James Llewellyn Dunn is a significant figure in Windsor's history. He fought to desegregate the city's school system, was the first black trustee on the Windsor Board of Education and the first black Alderman on Windsor's city council.

Dunn was also a successful businessman, owning and operating Dunn's Paint and Varnish in Windsor.

The new school project will soon be put out for tender to general contractors. Primary construction is expected to begin this spring. A portion of the school will be the heritage property which was once the International Playing Card Company building.
