Play-based Learning
- dramatic bullying prevention message for Grade 7s -

“My Daughter Veera”, a theatrical production of a real-life story, will once again be a significant part of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in the Greater Essex County District School Board.

The play, adapted for the stage and performed by students of the Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts, is based on the death of Reena Virk in Vancouver in 1997. She had been harassed and was killed by a group of young people she thought were her friends.

Every Grade 7 student in the GECDSB is scheduled to attend performances at Walkerville Collegiate Institute or Migration Hall in Kingsville during the week.

Each performance is complemented by a facilitated talk-back session with the play’s director and the performers and in class activities that can be done under teachers’ direction. The emphasis is on the role students can play in helping their peers learn about preventing bullying and violence at their school.

There will also be free evening performances open to the community on Monday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. at Migration Hall and Tuesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Walkerville Collegiate Institute.

For more information please contact GECDSB Diversity Officer Rachel Olivero at 519-255-3200 ext. 10213.
