- High School in unique partnership with hospital to develop mental health App -
Four students and two teachers from Leamington District Secondary School (LDSS) will have a hand in the development of a new medical application for mobile devices in a partnership that includes nurses, IT professionals, and administrators from Leamington District Memorial Hospital (LDMH).
From May 1-3, they will participate in Windsor-Detroit Hacking Health at Tech Town (Burroughs St.) in Detroit, an event designed to bring healthcare, IT, and design professionals together to “hack out” new mobile solutions for some of the health industry’s biggest challenges. This first of its kind cross-border event will engage the students along with LDMH staff in developing a new interactive mental health and wellness communication tool.
The goal for the team is to develop the blueprint for a communication tool that supports young people in their mental health and wellness. “The beauty about our partnership is that we have a team comprised of high school students who ultimately will be the end users of this APP. Having students involved as co-creators and designers will be essential to having this innovation adopted” says Zain Ismail, Manager of Innovation & Partnership at LDMH. “Thanks to events like this, rural hospitals and their communities can emerge as leaders in health systems innovation”.
The team will participate in networking and workshops with Canadian and US partners to create the applications and pitch the idea to attendees that will encourage potential funding to make it a reality. Along with venture capital opportunities, there will be over $20,000 of prizes up for grabs.
