- creating their own jobs through entrepreneurship –
The Greater Essex County District School Board is extremely pleased to be the only school board in Ontario to receive a Strategic Community Entrepreneurship Program grant from the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure. The $157 thousand allows the GECDSB to offer the Student Ventures program in 2015.
Student Ventures will allow as many as 30 GECDSB secondary school students to get access to training, resources and money to help start their own business.
Students begin with a concept, write business plans, develop a customer service strategy and are learning accounting principles. They then receive training from a group of business teachers and teacher-consultants. Throughout the operation of their business the students also get assistance from mentors, who run similar businesses in the community.
Besides the experience and, hopefully profit, successful students will earn co-op credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. It's a one year program that runs from March 2015 - March 2016.
To date 5 projects have been approved and are preparing for their first season of operation. They range from lawn care and maintenance to small-scale manufacturing.
