Exploring Paths to Peace
- students examine Canadian / US relationship-
Grade 7 and 8 students from five GECDSB schools will spend the next seven months using the arts to interpret the peaceful relationship between Canada and the United States which has existed for more than 200 years.
Paths to Peace is a War of 1812 commemoration project, first introduced in 2011, aiming to provide a learning experience about an important piece of North American history, connect students to historical sites and develop new friendships among young people from both countries.
Friday, October 21st 150 GECDSB students will gather in Amherstburg with students from Ypsilanti (Michigan) Community Middle School for a series of activities and workshops that will initiate their artistic collaborations. Working with professional artists in a variety of media, the students will develop projects they will unveil at the Paths to Peace Art Fest at Perry’s Victory historic site in Put-in-Bay, Ohio next spring.
Students will also be touring the Fort Malden historic site and getting insight on the War of 1812 from content specialists from Canada and the U.S.
Sessions begin Friday at 10:00 a.m. at General Amherst High School. For more information contact Public Relations Officer Scott Scantlebury @ 519-255-3200 ext. 10224 or 519-995-5797.
