Iron Hawk Expands
- school event becomes provincial championship -
The third annual Harrow District High School Iron Hawk Duathlon has been elevated to the status of provincial championship by Triathlon Ontario, the governing body for the multi-discipline athletic events.
The Iron Hawk Sprint Duathlon Championship will attract some of the top athletes in the province on May 10, 2014 in search of a share of $3,000 in prizes and possibly a berth at the World Duathlon Championship in Australia. Among the field will be Harrow native and HDHS grad Lionel Sanders, one of the top triathletes in the country.
Duathlon is a sister sport to triathlon – running and cycling without the swimming portion. The provincial sprint championship race will have a 5 kilometer run followed by 20 kilometer on the bike and completed with a 2.5 kilometer run.
The Iron Hawk Duathlon was introduced 2 years ago as a means of promoting positive mental health through physical fitness at Harrow DHS. It will continue to serve that end and is open to athletes of all abilities and ages, with a variety of different events to choose from that day.
A portion of the proceeds from the Iron Hawk will be donated to the United Way to fund mental health programs in the community.
