Every Learner – Every Day
- GECDSB sets ambitious goals -
The 2014-15 school year, which begins on Tuesday, September 2nd, promises to challenge, engage and provoke every student, employee and member of a school community throughout the Greater Essex County District School Board.
The Board’s new improvement plan for student achievement visualizes Excellence in Education for Every Learner - Every Day. The guiding principles are: concern with the individual learning needs of every student and empowering all sectors of the school community in student achievement. The plan includes ambitious goals for measurable areas of student achievement.
Over the next 2 years the Board is targeting 5% increases in EQAO results for Primary Writing, Junior Reading and Writing, Academic and Applied Grade 9 Math and the OSSLT. We are also shooting for a 10% increase in Primary Reading and both Primary and Junior Math.
Director of Education Erin Kelly says, “Excellence cannot be appreciated without exceptional goals.”
The GECDSB is opening 2 new schools this year. Westview Freedom Academy will serve high school students in west Windsor. It is located in the former Century Secondary School building on California Avenue which was closed in June. West Gate Public School will enjoy its first, first day of school on September 2nd. This new K-8 school on Campbell Avenue consolidates the Taylor and Benson public school communities.
As well, this fall students at Essex District High School will begin the year in new surroundings. The first phase of construction to replace the aging school on Talbot St. was completed this summer. Demolition of the old building is underway and the final stages of the new school will be completed over the coming year.
The implementation of Full Day Kindergarten is complete. All 56 of the Board’s elementary schools now offer full day – every day programs for 4 and 5 year olds.
Efforts continue to meet the individual needs and desires of secondary school students with the addition of 5 more Specialist High Skills Major programs and the expansion of cooperative learning opportunities in the community
The GECDSB will also foster community partnerships that connect students’ learning to the world and increase their capacity for good citizenship.
Positive relationships with students’ families will be supported through open, two-way communication that begins with regular conversations between teachers and parents / guardians. We will continue to promote involvement by parents in their child’s education with opportunities for participation and to improve their understanding of educational concerns.
As well, the GECDSB will remain respectful and appreciative of the rights and needs of our very professional and dynamic teaching and support staff members. There will be improved opportunities to increase their capacity to meet all students’ learning needs.
We look forward to pursuing excellence for Every Learner – Every Day over the next 10 months. Follow our activities and progress on our website, www.publicboard.ca or on Twitter @gecdsbpro.
