Updated Road to Freedom Curriculum

The Greater Essex County District School Board will release an updated version of its African-Canadian Roads to Freedom curriculum documents this week to teachers during their Friday, November 12th Professional Development day.

These locally developed resources are intended to provide background information on Black Canadian heritage and culture connected directly to specific learning expectations in the Ontario Social Studies, History and Geography curriculums.

The updates are necessary because our understanding of history is constantly deepening and growing. Roads to Freedom now includes new research on the Black Lives Matter movement, school segregation in Ontario, slavery in Canada and more.

The documents also provide information that will help teachers decolonize their language, to be more comfortable using currently accepted terminology regarding people of African descent.

To assist members of the media better understand the importance of Roads to Freedom we have produced a series of videos with individuals involved in the updates and students discussing the documents' value to teachers, students and the community:
