The Greater Essex County District School Board is pleased to report the results of its biennial School Climate Surveys.
Each school board in the province is mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Education to conduct these regular, anonymous surveys of students (Grades 4-12), parents / guardians and staff to help:
- assess perceptions of safety
- make informed planning decisions about programs to support mental health, help prevent bullying, and promote safe and inclusive schools
- determine the effectiveness of their programs on an ongoing basis
- build and sustain positive school climate
The comprehensive review of the data indicates the GECDSB is successful in meeting expectations and many of the goals set out in action plans which were developed from the 2013 data.
1,454 staff members, 15,712 students and 1057 parents / guardians completed the on-line questionnaire this year. The number of parents / guardians who participated is an increase of 40% from the initial survey conducted in 2013. While the increase is significant, the Board is determined to promote greater participation from this important group in the future.
The vast majority of students feel there has been an increase in safety for them in and around their schools. Parents and staff have indicated that they feel incidents of bullying are taken seriously at their school and that there are strategies in place to address and prevent this behaviour.
The GECDSB results are available on www.publicboard.ca under the Schools dropdown.
