The gates opened and students poured through signifying the official opening of the Wolves' Den.
Students and staff at West Gate Public School put together a ceremony to celebrate the completion and opening of their new school.
West Gate Public School, which opened to students in September 2014 was designed by Glos Associates Inc. and built by WinCon Construction at a cost of approximately $10 million. It replaced J.E. Benson and H.D. Taylor public schools, which were officially closed at the end of the last school year.
Joining members of the community were GECDSB Trustees and administrators, school staff, students and their families. Erin Kelly, Director of Education told the large crowd that every new school has its curses, but as many blessings and West Gate was no exception to this rule.
“I especially want to express my appreciation to the families of this school community, many of whom have been waiting a very long time for this moment. Your patience has been rewarded with a wonderful building and an incredible asset for the west side of Windsor,” Kelly said.
Student voice took over the celebration explaining why they were proud to be part of the West Gate family , what it means to be a West Gate Wolf and welcoming the community to their new home. There were fond memories recalled, new memories created and lots of laughs during the presentation.
Thursday’s event acknowledged the contributions of all the GECDSB staff, community partners and contractors that had a role in the planning and realization of the project.
