The Greater Essex County District School Board and the Alpha Kai Omega Fraternity (AKO) have entered into an important partnership which will see the Frat take over operations of historic Windsor Stadium.
Windsor Stadium has hosted some of the most significant sporting events in the city and now stands to be revitalized under this new agreement. The AKO organization is revered in Windsor for promoting self-esteem, sportsmanship and leadership among young people.
"The Greater Essex County District School Board encourages partnerships that enhance student learning, civic responsibility and a sense of community," said Alan Halberstadt, Acting Chairperson of the GECDSB's Board of Trustees.(on right in photo, with AKO's John Zucchet and Darren Cocchetto)
He added that both the GECDSB and AKO have similar values and this agreement is a step in the right direction for both organizations.
It is anticipated that this agreement will provide opportunities for students, not just at Kennedy Collegiate Institute - Windsor Stadium is the school's home field - but throughout our region.
John Zucchet, Chair of the AKO Board stated that the agreement would take effect immediately and AKO would set out to accomplish two main goals.
"To keep the memory of this valuable historic site alive and vibrant in all its glorious past service to the city which bears its name," Zucchet said.
The second goal for AKO is to continue their legacy of service to amateur sport well into the 21st Century, according to Zucchet "to provide greater growth and development opportunities to our youth through improved access to better athletic, artistic and cultural resources."
"This partnership means more to us than simply a license agreement," he said.
