In celebration of the Greater Essex County District School Board's first Staff Appreciation Week (May 4-8), the GECDSB shines a light on Walter Cassidy and his work with students, his colleagues and in the community.
A passionate advocate for equality, Walter Cassidy has been recognized by the Windsor and District Labour Council with their 2015 Education Advocacy Award.
Walter is in his 15th year as a teacher with the GECDSB, the last 10 years at Walkerville Collegiate Institute. He is currently the Arts Department Head and badminton coach.
Cassidy was instrumental in assisting students at WCI to establish the first Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) in Southwestern Ontario in 2009, an effort which was recognized by EGALE, a Canadian human rights trust. His many community connections to organizations such as Windsor Pride and SAFE (Service Alliance for Equality) has helped to create a bond between the local education community and the LGBT community.
Cassidy was presented the Man of the Year Award during Pride Fest 2012.
His influence has extended beyond Walkerville Collegiate Institute, promoting the creation and maintenance of GSA groups in all high schools as chair of the GECDSB Gay Straight Alliance Conference. He is also an ardent supporter of the annual Run for Rocky.
Cassidy has served on the OSSTF District 9 Executive as the Equity Officer which involves chairing the Human Rights and Status of Women Committees as well as being the liaison to the GECDSB GSA for Staff since 2008.
