Each fall, shortly after the beginning of the school year, it's a tradition in many GECDSB schools to hold a Terry Fox run or walk to support the ongoing efforts of the Terry Fox Foundation. Forty-eight school communities staged events last year. Over the last 2 decades the GECDSB has contributed $773,557.40, according to a report from the foundation
Sandwich Secondary School in LaSalle continues to be among the most active supporters, collecting more than $10 thousand dollars last year and $124,975 over the last 11 years. Some small school communities produced notable results: Princess Elizabeth Public School raised more than $2500 last year and East Mersea Public School contributed $1818 to the Terry Fox Foundation.
According to the foundation, money raised in the name of Terry Fox has helped fund 1,200 cancer research projects across Canada to date.
