Summer vacation is an opportunity to rest and relax, or pursue some recreational interests such as sports, camping or travel. Some people need a break from school but once again this summer many didn't go to the beach because they chose to go to class.
One thousand, four hundred students took advantage of one of the GECDSB's summer school programs this year, earning more than 1200 high school credits. One hundred and fifty of those credits were earned through on-line programs while 450 credits were picked up in coop programs. Those students had summer job placements in a wide variety of industries (pictured, right) with many getting a pay check as well as advancement on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
A group of more than 100 in-coming Grade 9 students picked up the first credit they'll need toward their OSSD in the Reaching Ahead program (pictured, below). Fifty more Grade 6 and 7 students were Moving Forward with an additional 3 weeks of learning this summer.
