2018 Energy Challenge

Young students wearing sweaters give thumbs up.jpgOne third of a building’s energy consumption is directly related to the behaviour of its occupants. This January the Board's â€‹EcoSchools Committee will be launching the 7th annual Energy Challenge and based on great previous success GECDSB staff and students prove they can reduce their energy and water use and continue to promote an energy-conscious culture. Last year, the 50 school communities that participated, as well as our Administration Building, collectively decreased their use of electricity by more than 730,000 kWh and 13,000,000 litres of water saving the Board  approximately $186,000 in utility costs.

All schools are invited to participate in the 2018 Energy Challenge, even multiple year participants.

Over a six month period, schools are asked to commit to an action plan and implement strategies involving staff and students to reduce their energy impact, such as designating an energy conservation task force, shutting off lights and equipment when not needed, participating in sweater days, reporting water leaks, having communication campaigns and reporting any temperature issues, rather than attempting to handle themselves. 

As a reward for their efforts, each school will receive 25% of the utility savings realized between January and June.
