2019-20 Student Trustees

Anumita Jain.JPGIt's a short, intense process to get selected as a GECDSB Student Trustee; there's not much time to learn the job and the term is only for 1 year. However, Anumita Jain (pictured, left) and Nabil Johny (pictured, right), the 2019-20 Student Trustees, are ready for the challenge and aren't wasting any of their precious time.

Nabil Johny.JPGJain, from Vincent Massey SS and Johny, who attends Leamington District SS are eager to make a difference for students among the adults on the Board. "Board decisions are going to effect us," says Nabil. Jain feels adults "don't always see our point of view." But she's determined to have students' voices heard.

Student Trustees do get to vote on motions before the Board, to express a position, but the vote is non-binding. It's important, though, to both young people, that they and their peers are represented in the discussion.

Mental health is a topic both Student Trustees want to emphasize this year. "It's a big issue," says Jain.

The Student Trustees also chair the GECDSB Student Senate, a body made up of student leaders from each of the board's high schools. They meet once each month to discuss issues effecting students and participate in community events a few times each year.
