Massey Student Receives Schulich Scholarship

Shadeh Saleh - Schulich scholarship winner.jpgShahed Saleh (pictured, left), a Grade 12 student at Vincent Massey Secondary School is passionate about creating machines that can make society more efficient and she's motivated by influencing others to find their inspiration in the field of engineering. "I have realized that it is my responsibility to support the STEM dreams of students as well as commit to being a role model for what inclusive innovation looks like," she says.

It was that attitude and her obvious technical skills which earned Shahed a $100 thousand Schulich Leader Scholarship to pursue her studies in Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She's the first Massey student to receive the prestigious national award, presented to 50 high school graduates each year in Canada.

Shahed was the team captain of the Massey FIRST robotics team, a mentor for FIRST Lego League elementary school teams and co-founder of STEM Day and CodeReach events while she was in high school.

Scholarship program founder Seymour Schulich says students like Shahed Saleh, "can now focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars and entrepreneurial ventures" now that their university expenses are covered. "They are the next generation of technology innovators."
