Vincent Massey Secondary School student awarded largest Canadian STEM scholarship

For this year, number of scholarships doubles to 100

Windsor June 5, 2020 ---Anish Aggarwal has been selected to receive an $ 80 000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to Computer Science at the University Of Waterloo.

A graduate of Vincent Massey Secondary School  in Windsor Ontario, Anish will be entering the Computer Science program this Fall. Aggarwal was selected by Julia Zuk for his outstanding academic and extra curricular achievements. Anish is a great student who gives back to the community.  He founded and runs the Code Reach program at Massey introducing Elementary students to coding in computer science.  Anish participate in numerous Hack A-thons, he has established Massey’ first chapter of Canadian Young Physicist, and he is a lead member of the computer science club.  This is the second Nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at Massey Secondary School.

Given the unparalleled current disruption, there is a much greater need for students to get financial support in order to pursue their university education. This year, The Schulich Foundation has decided to award an additional 50 scholarships, for a total of 100.

“Schulich Leader Scholarships are the premiere STEM scholarship program in Canada and the world. With 100 outstanding students selected in Canada this year, it is all but guaranteed that this group will represent the best and brightest Canada has to offer. These future leaders will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of technology innovators,” says Mr. Schulich.

How will this scholarship change things for you?

Being a Schulich leader connects me with passionate and diverse STEM scholars, who I hope to collaborate with to broaden my knowledge. Since high school, I have participated in numerous computer science related extracurricular activities, from hack-a-thons to coding community outreach programs, because they better developed my knowledge and skills. Therefore, I hope to use my recognition as a Schulich leader to continue learning beyond the four-walls of the classroom, because, for me, that is how life-long skills are shaped.

How did it feel to receive the notice of offer for the scholarship?

After receiving the notice of offer for the scholarship, I felt a mixture of emotions, including disbelief, pride, and appreciation. My passion for computer science and my efforts through extra-curricular activities was recognized. I immediately told my family, friends and teachers who supported me through this process. Due to their support, leadership, and collaboration, I was able to be awarded this great title. I hope that I, too, can inspire other students in my community to seek opportunities beyond the classroom.

How will this scholarship help you reach your goals?

Being a Schulich leader will help support my interest in coding and creating programs with my own hands. I hope to be able to create new technologies with a large focus on deepening the user-technology experience. I believe that this scholarship will open up resources and opportunities to work with other like-minded individuals, with whom I can develop experiences and skills to reach my goals.

What distinguishes this student from others to receive such a prestigious honour?

Anish is an excellent student, his performance in the class room is unrivaled but, that is  not the only thing that makes him special; Anish inspires the students around him to do better.  He encourages, helps and is kind to everyone.  He wants to share his passion for computer science and that is why he teaches 300 Elementary students coding weekly, and why Anish’s programs are focused on helping others.  Anish is one of the strongest academic students we have at Massey but his desire and passion for computer science are stronger.

About Schulich Leader Scholarships Canada

Recognizing the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established this $100+ million scholarship fund in 2012 to encourage our best and brightest students to become Schulich Leader Scholars: the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators.

Through The Schulich Foundation, these prestigious entrance scholarships are awarded to 100 high school graduates this year, enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at 20 partner universities in Canada. Every high school in Canada can submit one Schulich Leader Nominee per academic year based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership and financial need.
