Cleaning and Disinfecting in Schools

Door handle being cleaned.PNGThe GECDSB has always been committed to maintaining a healthy and safe learning and working environment for all staff, students and essential visitors to our schools and buildings. It is our first priority.

The appropriate selection of safe cleaning and disinfecting products for use in our system is completed in a transparent and inclusive process.  The approval of products for use in school buildings are part of the Board's Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Management Program, in consultation with our Occupational Joint Health & Safety Committees and union partners in accordance with all appropriate legislation. We also regularly consult with our local Windsor Essex County Health Unit to help ensure all such disinfecting products are approved for usage by Health Canada and have a Drug Identification Number.

Our Board's cleaning and disinfecting products include "Quats" based products such as Virex, which are very common throughout businesses and health care settings in Canada.  They are products approved by the Federal Government, are on the Health Canada COVID-19 list of disinfectants and are also referenced in the WECHU's "Safe Return to School Tool Kit".  https://www.wechu.org/sites/default/files/edit-resource/em-safe-return-school-toolkit/sept-8-safe-return-school-toolkit.pdf

The GECDSB applies and utilizes such cleaners and disinfectants according to the manufacturer and supplier specifications and dilution factors. The Board trains all staff on WHMIS regularly to ensure all products in schools are used safely.

Our most recent consultation with the WECHU was Friday September 25, 2020, in which they noted "since this is an approved product by Health Canada with a DIN, there is no concern from the health unit regarding its use in workplace".
