Nineteen GECDSB secondary students are taking advantage of an innovative program this year to learn construction with Local 494 of the Carpenters and Joiners Union.
A grant of $348,646 from the government of Ontario's Skills Catalyst Fund has allowed the students to learn, first-hand from working professionals and earn credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Local 494 President Tomi Hulkkonen said, "Who's more excited?" during an announcement at the local's training centre, he and his members, or the students who were sporting their brand new tool belts donated by Milwaukee tools.
"Itβs partnerships like this Enhanced Construction Program
that will keep our region β and the province β moving in the right direction..", said GECDSB Director of Education Erin Kelly (pictured, left).
The students are studying construction theory in the classroom built at the training centre for this program before going to job sites in Windsor and Essex County to begin their apprenticeships.
