International Students to Play for Provincial Titles

3 International students pose with SWOSSAA medals.JPGThe GECDSB International Student Program promotes opportunities for students from around the world to learn in Windsor and Essex County. That includes more than just classroom work. International students are encouraged to be involved in their school communities and to participate in extra-curricular activities.

Three young women at Riverside Secondary School have joined in and will be representing their new school at an OFSAA championship.

Rosalia Rey Blanco and Iria Campos Fenandez of Spain and Yuka Kuwahara of Japan joined the school tennis team this fall and have had a tremendous experience.  Iria is new to tennis but wanted to try a sport at the school.  She came into the guidance office one day and asked,"How do I join a sport?"  When asked about her experience, she said, "Before, I didn't think tennis was a fun sport, but now I like it and I want to play more.  I'm going to miss the friends I made.  It was the first club I joined."

My parents are proud of me and they're glad I like tennis again."

Yuka also found success here, winning the WECSSAA and SWOSSAA Ladies Doubles titles with her new friend and partner, Riverside student Lily Nikolovski.  "It was fun playing with Lily.  She gave me good advice on the court.  I didn't think I could be first in Southwestern Ontario.  I am very happy. I can't believe it.  My parents are happy for me and want me to keep having fun."

Rosalia, Yuka and Lily will represent Riverside at the OFSAA Tennis Championships at the University of Toronto in June, 2018.
