Many more GECDSB students were able to see and chat with Kevin Rempel in an on-line event than would have, had he travelled to Windsor and spoken in person. More than 400 joined in on a YouTube Live presentation with the former Olympic medalist to hear his message about overcoming adversity and developing healthy habits.
The presentation was sponsored by the GECDSB Student Success department and the Specialist High Skills Major program. It's hoped that it's the first in a series of informative and inspirational speakers targeted at high school students.
Rempel won a bronze medal for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Sledge Hockey less than a decade after breaking his back in a motorcycle accident. He calls his presentation The Hero Mindset and he challenged the students to do and think the things that will "make you the hero of your own movie!". He also talked about building routines, healthy habits and basic life fundamentals to create a foundation for success, just as he did when he worked to recover from his injuries to walk again, which he achieved!
He told the students that "your future is determined by your attitude and your mindset." He also spent a portion of his presentation answering questions from students and teachers, going over his allotted 1 hour session.
