It's remarkable what kids can create with a pile of dirt, especially if you provide them with the right resources. The Kingsville Horticultural Society discovered that given a bag of seeds and some motivation they can produce tremendous displays of colourful plants and flowers.
The society's Junior Gardener program this year had 106 participants who took their seeds, bulbs and tomato plugs and created gardens in their own yards to be judged, at summer's end, based on healthy plants, care of gardens and the students' general knowledge of the experience. The competition categories were in age groups from 4 to 14 and the gardening kits were delivered in May.
Besides the benefits of the enterprise, itself, participants who completed the program received a certificate from the horticulture society and medals were awarded to the first second and third highest scores in each category.
