Students and staff from Tecumseh Vista Academy participated in a successful 4 year collaboration among schools from Ontario, Alberta and Norway. This international exchange of ideas began in 2014 with the goal of improving equity in math classes in each jurisdiction.
The final summit of this unique endeavour was held in Norway in April and built upon the concept of student voice, which had developed during previous meetings.
After the initial meetings, Tecumseh Vista adopted a Math Council to gather student voice. During their visit to Essex County representatives from the 8 other NorCan schools witnessed this in action . The TVA Math Council meets once a month with students and 3 times each year with teachers and students. They discuss new ways of teaching math, put on workshops for parents, set class goals and promote growth midset in math classrooms.
This practice has since been adopted by all the program participants and has also spread throughout the GECDSB with a Northshore Math Council being formed among TVA, Lakeshore Discovery and D.M. Eagle Public School.
Teachers at the schools are now more in tune with their students' needs that allow them to be successful in math. The NorCan project has concluded but there is a legacy of achievement which continues.
