The demolition of the old Essex District High School has been unavoidably delayed for approximately four weeks. A water main that feeds the Aquatic Centre, attached to the school, runs under the area being demolished.
Town of Essex Environmental Services is working closely with the general contractor, Wincon Construction, to replace the original cast iron water main. Construction of Phase 2 of the new building remains on schedule.
“We have to bore under the building and put in a new line to feed the aquatic centre. Once this is in place and working, we will abandon the old line,” according to GECDSB Coordinator of Engineering, Giuliana Hinchliffe.
Once the work on the main is finished, the remainder of the old building will come down. For safety, the site is secured 24 hours a day.
