Frequently Asked Questions regarding School Closure as a result of COVID-19
Will students be provided with learning resources during the Ontario school closure?
GECDSB Teacher Consultants have gathered a list of home study and educational resources for students in all grade levels. They are posted @https://www.publicboard.ca/News/HomeStudyandStudentCurriculumResources/Pages/default.aspx#/=
We will also be using our social media platforms (Facebook) & (Twitter) to regularly share resources and ideas to help students and their families maintain studies during this hiatus from the classroom.
The Ontario Ministry of Education has prepared supplementary resources for elementary and secondary students to practice math and literacy skills to help mitigate learning loss during the ordered school closures. Use this link: Learn at Home
While these materials do not replace what students have been learning at school, during this unusual time, these at-home activities offer quick and easy access to some of Ontario’s best online kindergarten to grade 12 learning resources.
What do I do if I

Will the scheduled Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) take place?
No, the Ministry of Education has confirmed the OSSLT will not take place this year. For students who are graduating in the 2019-20 school year, the literacy graduation requirement will be waived. Students who are not eligible to graduate this school year will have the opportunity to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in the upcoming 2020-21 school year.
Will students be at risk of not graduating?
It is expected that direction will be provided by the Ministry of Education on the status of students eligible to graduate in the 2019/2020 school year.
Will co-op placements, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP) and School Within a College (SWAC) programs continue during the closure of schools?
No. All programs are postponed for the duration of the closure. Students will not be attending their co-op placements. Further details on program adjustments will be communicated through school and board contacts as they become available.
Will dual credit courses (with community colleges, post-secondary institutions, etc.) continue during this time?
No, students in our Dual Credit programs will not attend their college classes.
Will board programs and sites, such as Adult Education and Continuing Education classes, Public Alternative Secondary School, Night School, etc. , remain open?
No. All GECDSB programs will be cancelled during this time.
Will International Language programs continue?
No, International Language classes will be cancelled from March 14 to April 5, 2020, inclusive.
Will scheduled parent-teacher interviews scheduled occur?
No, these have been cancelled.
Will university and college applications be impacted or adjusted as a result of school closures?
The Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) and Ontario universities are closely monitoring the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on students' applications. Please refer to the following websites for more information about university and college applications:

Will EQAO continue for grades 3, 6 and 9?
No, the Ministry of Education has confirmed that all EQAO assessments for the 2019/2020 school year are cancelled.
Are year-end grade 8 trips affected by COVID-19 at this time?
All overnight field trips for the remainder of the year have been cancelled. Further information on day trips will be provided in the near future.
Will the school year be extended into the summer?
The decision to extend the school year would be made by the Ministry of Education.
How should I talk with my child about COVID-19/Coronavirus?

Will schools be cleaned during the closure?
Yes, our custodial staff will be in schools before the resumption of classes to do deep cleaning.
Will bus companies be cleaning their buses during the closure?
Yes, all buses will be deep cleaned during the school closure period.
How can I stay up to date with information from the GECDSB?
While schools are closed we encourage families to continue to check for updates from us through our website, www.publicboard.ca on the Public Health Advisories page as well as out social media pages: Facebook , Twitter
Will Childcare programs and EarlyON Centres be operating?
As GECDSB schools will be closed for the duration of the ordered school closure (March 14 – April 5), all child care centres and EarlyOn programs operating in or on school property will not be open.
Will community use of schools/rentals be cancelled?
Yes, we have cancelled all community group bookings/permits for the duration of the closure period.
Will Board offices/administrative centres be open?
No, all GECDSB offices and facilities will be closed for the duration of the ordered school closure period.
The main phone line 519-255-3200 will receive voice mail message, which will be checked regularly.
Can I contact my child's Vice Principal, Principal or Superintendent during the closure period?
Yes. While schools are closed, Vice Principals, Principals and Superintendents will be checking voicemail and email should you have any urgent questions or concerns.
I am a vendor who does business with the GECDSB. How can I send invoices to the GECDSB during the shutdown period?
Invoices and payment – Please be advised that invoices should be forwarded electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org. The GECDSB will process payment of invoices, but please expect delays in receiving payment.
The GECDSB will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to vendors regarding deliveries of goods.
Will there be mail courier deliveries to schools during the school closure?
Mail delivery will be suspended during the closure.
