Sweet Holiday Philanthropy

Kindergarten students and their teachers with Jessica Sartori and Mike Clark.jpgThe kindergarten students at Belle River Public School won't be able to spell the word philanthropy for a few years, but they know the meaning.

decorated Kindercane.jpegOver the last few weeks the JKs and SKs have been marketing their Kindercanes around the school to their schoolmates and they made a sweet profit. They sold 1,028 of the brightly decorated seasonal treats.

The idea started as out a classroom inquiry about giving during the holiday season with students providing ideas and suggestions about what they could do and who they could help.

They decided to donate the proceeds of their sales to the Children's Aid Society.  Chairperson of the GECDSB Board of Trustees, Jessica Sartori, who works at the CAS and her colleague Mike Clark (pictured, left) stopped by to thank the students and accept their cheque which will help kids in care and families over the holidays.

The students also got more from the experience than just the good feeling you get when you help others. They practiced their literacy and numeracy skills along with a number of other curriculum expectations.
