Each year the Legislative Assembly of Ontario sponsors a Model Parliament for high school students from across the province and this year Basel Abdulla of Westview Freedom Academy (pictured, left, with WFA Guidance Counsellor Justin Levack) will have a seat for the 3 day event in Toronto.
The Model Parliament is an educational program designed for civic-minded students (Grades 10-12) who are interested in current events and provincial issues. Participants learn about and develop an appreciation for the history of the legislative process in Ontario through workshops and presentations. They will also take part in a simulation of a session in the legislative chamber.
To be selected, Basel had to complete the on-line application which included a 400-500 word essay on why he thought he would be a good candidate. He had to illustrate his maturity, leadership skills and responsibility as well as strong interpersonal and social skills. Involvement in community and extra-curricular activities is essential to any application.
One hundred and seven students will enjoy this unique experience February 21-23rd.
