Character Development Initiatives

  • Since 2007, the GECDSB has conducted the “We Care, We Can” food drive in partnership with Mayflower Moving, the Unemployed Help Centre and  local Rotary Clubs. Through the efforts of the students and staff in our schools, along with our partners, hundreds of tonnes of food has been donated to local food banks over that time. This great initiative provides an opportunity for our students to become more engaged in the community and supports character development, in particular, the key characteristic of “Caring”.

  • Student Led Service Projects -
We have had tremendous success with our student-led service projects initiative. Over 30 service projects have been planned and implemented by students in both elementary and secondary schools. This year, over 40 new projects are being implemented across the board, all with the goal of improving our local and global communities.
There are two types of grants for student-led service projects, based on the grade level of the students. Both types of grants involve students planning and initiating service projects. They are student-led, with direct support and coaching from a teacher or other school staff member. Students from grades 4 through 12 were eligible to apply for "Students Taking Action" grants, while students from JK to Grade 3 could apply for "KidStart Minigrants". These minigrants were funded by the Windsor Essex Community Foundation.
