In September, 2021 the GECDSB began the process of eliminating the streaming of students into separate Applied and Academic high school programs. The initial step is de-streaming Grade 9 Math.
This is part of the GECDSB's broad strategy to provide equitable opportunities and its strong commitment to positive outcomes for all students, in particular students who have been historically underserved. This action is in response to local and provincial advocacy, considerations, observations and data.
The GECDSB continues to honour all educational pathways: apprenticeship, college, university, work and community living.
For information please contact a GECDSB high school Guidance office.
In the video below, Director of Education Erin Kelly and Superintendent Josh Canty explain why destreaming is happening at the GECDSB. Staff and students share the impact that streaming has had on their own educational pathways, their students' educational pathways and how streaming can influence students' perception of their own abilities.
