October Student of the Month

Layla Bakaa, Ava Gossen, Iman Berry.jpgThe Student of the Month for October is Ava Gossen, a Grade 12 student at Leamington District Secondary School. Ava is a passionate, driven and very bright individual. She is an excellent student who excels academically. She has been on Leamington’s Honor Roll since Grade 9 and she is a strong leader and positive role model.

Ava currently serves as the Minister of the Arts on Leamington’s Student Council and has taken several leadership courses such as Business and Fitness Leadership at LDSS. Aside from academics and leadership, Ava is involved in many extracurricular activities including the school Swim Team, Eco Team and CrossFit club.

Ava is also involved in a multitude of projects aimed at improving life in the greater Leamington community. She has volunteered at Erie Shores Health Care where she assisted in day to day tasks.  Last year she started a pilot project with Hospice where she collected crafting supplies every month and delivered them to children visiting Hospice to help occupy them while they are spending time with their loved ones.

Ava has an interest and talent for STEAM subjects. Since Grade 9, she has commissioned five paintings for Erie Shores Health Care. She won first place in the colored pencil division at the 20th annual juried student art show. Ava also competed in Technovation, a coding competition to empower women to study computer science. Ava coded an app called “Mental Health Helpline”, which is designed to connect people with mental health services in Ontario.

Additionally, Ava has an entrepreneurial spirit. She started a lifeguarding business through a grant from the Windsor-Essex Small Business Center.  She attended a business competition at Western’s Ivey School of Business and was selected to attend Ivey’s Summer Leadership Program. During this summer program, her business group presented their idea to executives at Canada's Wonderland and they won first place.

Overall, Ava displays exemplary leadership and a strong commitment to her school and the greater community. Congratulations Ava for being selected by Student Senate as October’s Student of the Month.
