The Student of the Month for April is Jake Simone, a Grade 12 student at General Amherst High School. Since Grade 9, hardworking and creative Jake has participated in the drama club at General Amherst. He has played roles such as Roger in "Grease" and also acted in the Sears Drama show "Runaways" which moved onto the regional festival last year.
This year, Jake wrote and directed the play "49 Times", a dramatic play about the shooting at Pulse night club in Orlando on June 12, 2016 in which 49 people were killed. The play was entered into the Sears Drama Fest where it was well received and has moved onto regionals. Jake said he was upset that the media's reporting was focused on the large number of casualties and its emphasis that it took place at a gay nightclub. Jake wanted to show that these people were not merely victims but they were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, wives and husbands. The play won Outstanding Performance and the Award of Excellence for Set Design.
Congratulations Jake for being selected by Student Senate as the Student of the Month for April!
