December Student of the Month

December student of the month Cullen Roy with Student Trustees.jpgThe Student of the Month for December is Cullen Roy, a Grade 9 student at Sandwich Secondary School.

Cullen started making a positive impact locally and globally at a very young age.  His first introduction to community engagement started in Grade 2 at Bellewood Public School where he helped collect over 400 boxes of food.  Over the years, Cullen has participated in a number of initiatives such as bake sales, yard sales and collections to raise money and awareness for both global and local causes. He has done everything from raising money to buy goats for families in third world countries to collecting diapers, baby food, and non-perishable goods for a local food bank.  Cullen also grew his hair and donated it to an organization that makes wigs for cancer survivors. He has been a dedicated canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for the past three years and he quickly became their top producer. He has also collected over 1,000 batteries for a group that uses the funds to help treat children with zinc deficiencies.

Cullen’s commitment to social justice issues quickly became obvious to his teachers and he was selected to attend a mini-WE day in Windsor.  He was later selected to attend WE Days in both Waterloo and Toronto and upon his return gave a school-wide presentation on his experiences in giving back to the community and the world at large.

In his Grade 8 year, Cullen started a fundraising club at Bellewood to learn about issues affecting people in third world countries.  These discussions resulted in the execution of a school-wide “water walk” to help students to understand the experience many people, mostly girls, have to go through to get clean water.

Cullen demonstrates kindness, selflessness and commitment to everything he does. His dedication to social justice issues is admirable and he inspires his classmates to make a positive impact in the school and the local and global community.

Congratulations Cullen for being selected by Student Senate as the December Student of the Month.
