The Student of the Month for January is McKenna Lumley, a Grade 10 student at Walkerville Collegiate Institute. McKenna is the embodiment of this month's theme of "Perseverance".
McKenna is in the WCCA Drama Program and truly loves her craft. She has had roles in school plays and was a studio dancer for many years. She shares her love for the arts by volunteering with a dance performance company and doing shows in the community in nursing homes, festivals and other events.
McKenna is an enthusiastic volunteer for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and was recently awarded the national Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. She volunteers at any event the Foundation hosts such as performing at the annual fundraising walk. Her fundraising team is ranked number two in the country in terms of funds raised. McKenna even started a small business to raise money and awareness for the Foundation.
McKenna has publicly shared her experience surviving a brain tumour. She is a public speaker and published author and inspires many with her courage and perseverance. McKenna has lived an amazing life in such a short amount of time. Anyone who knows her agrees that she is a happy, positive and inspirational young woman. McKenna has persevered through every challenge life has thrown her way.
