The student of the Month for May is Jaxson Nosella, a Grade 11 student at Sandwich Secondary School who exemplifies this month's theme of "Volunteerism". Jaxson enjoys engaging in community service within the school community and outside the classroom.
In elementary school, Jaxson participated in the school's FNMI Social Justice group which worked together to stage a week-long event aimed at bringing awareness of indigenous issues to the school community. The group hosted a school assembly where local indigenous community members shared their knowledge and perspectives on a variety of topics including missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, residential schools, government relations and treaties. The group documented its activities during the week with photos and notes to further share and reflect on their learning. In an effort to include all grades in the learning experience, Jaxson and the group members read indigenous children's books to the school's primary and junior students to share the rich cultures of Canada's indigenous peoples. Jaxson was chosen to take part in an interview that was produced into a video recording about the experience of those who took part in FNMI learning in the school community.
Outside of school, Jaxson was a catalyst behind the formation of the W.E. Care for Kids Lemonade Brigade where he and his teammates sell baked goods and lemonade at Windsor Regional Hospital. The initiative goes a step further and also provides starter kits to children which provides them with all the accessories they need to launch a lemonade stand in their own neighbourhood. When lemonade is out of season, Jaxson helps W.E. Care for Kids sell hot chocolate at Bright Lights Windsor at Jackson Park during the holidays. Jaxson and the other founding Lemonade Brigade members were recognized for their initiative by Mayor Drew Dilkens in 2018 as "Community Champions".
Jaxson is a passionate and dedicated community builder who truly exemplifies this month's theme of "Volunteerism". Congratulations Jaxson on being selected by Student Senate as the Student of the Month for May!
