Dear Parents/ Guardians and Future Nobles,

We are pleased to welcome you to Belle River District High School. Please know that we will do everything we can to make your high school experience a positive one.

The documents included in this online package are provided to assist future Nobles and their families with Registration and the course selection process for Grade 9 at Belle River District High School.

 

Steps to complete the registration process are:

Family of Schools (Belle River Public School, Centennial Central, Lakeshore Discovery)

 

Non-Family of Schools (Students from any other Elementary School from all School Boards)

Choosing Courses for Grade 9.

As part of its effort to ensure all students can reach their full potential, the Ministry of Education has implemented that all Grade 9 subjects will be offered in one stream beginning in September 2022.    At BRDHS, Students will take the following courses:

Grade 9 Course Descriptions

ENG1D: English

This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives.  Students will analyze, literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms.  An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. 

ENG1L: Locally Developed English

This course prepares students for Grade 10 Locally developed English (ENG2L).  It provides foundational literacy and communication skills to students for success in their daily lives and in the workplace.  The course is organized by strands that develop listening and talking skills, reading and viewing skills, and writing skills.  In all strands, the focus is on developing foundational literacy skills and in using language clearly and accurately in a variety of authentic contexts.  Students reflect regularly upon their growth in these areas. 

FSF1DC: Core French

This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills.  Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as relationships social trends, and careers.  Thematic readings, which include a selection of short studies, articles and poems will serve as stepping stones to oral and written activities. 

FIF1DC:  French Immersion

This course enables students to enhance their knowledge of the French language and to further develop skills through the study of twentieth-century North American francophone literature and culture.  Students will participate in oral communication, reading and writing activities as they study an authentic novel and selected authentic poems, legends, songs, films and newspaper articles from French-speaking parts of North America.

 

MTH1W:  Mathematics

This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning.  Students will investigate relationships, which they will then generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations of a linear relation.  They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes.  Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. 

MAT1L:  Locally Developed Mathematics

This course focuses on the knowledge and skills required to be well prepared for success in the Grade 10 Locally developed Mathematics (MAT2L) course.  It will support students in developing and enhancing strategies that they need to develop mathematical literacy skills and the confidence to use these skills in their day-to-day lives.  The areas of Money Sense, Measurement and Proportional Reasoning form the basis of the course content. 

SNC1W:  Science

This course enables students to develop their understanding of concepts related to biology, chemistry, physics and earth and space science, and to relate science to technology, society and the environment.  Throughout the course students will develop and refine their STEM skills as they use scientific research, scientific experimentation, and engineering design processes to investigate concepts and apply their knowledge in situations that are relevant to their lives and communities.  Students will continue to develop transferable skills as they become scientifically literate global citizens.

SNC1L:  Locally Developed Science

This course reinforces and strengthens science-related knowledge and skills, including scientific inquiry, critical thinking and the relationship between science, society and the environment.  Students explore a range of topics including Science in Daily Life, Properties of Common Materials, Staying Alive:  Life Sustaining Processes and Electrical Circuits. 

CGC1D:  Geography/ CGC1DF:  Géographie

This course explores Canada’s distinct and changing character and the geographic systems and relationships that shape it.  It will investigate the interactions of natural and human systems within Canada as well as Canada’s economic, cultural, and environmental connections to other countries.  Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to analyze and evaluate geographic issues and present their findings. 

PPL1OF or PPL1OM:  Healthy Active Living Education

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living.  Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, and safety and injury prevention.  They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal setting, communication and social skills.

PAI1O:  Canada Hockey Skills Academy/ Health Active Living Education

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities with a focus on Hockey and its skills that promote lifelong healthy active living.  Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, and safety and injury prevention.  They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal setting, communication and social skills.

ADA1O:  Dramatic Arts

This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques.  Using material form a wide range of sources and cultures.  Students will use the elements of Drama to examine situations and issues that rea relevant to their lives.  Students will create, perform, discuss and analyze drama and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form and the world around them.

AMU1O:  Instrumental Music

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensibility and imagination.  Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities   Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music and of safe practices related to music and will develop a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life.

AMR1O:  Music Repertoire (Early morning class)

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity and imagination.  Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance and a range of reflective and analytical activities.  Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music and of safe practices related to music and will develop a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life.

AVI1O:  Visual Art

This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study.  Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques and styles.  Students will use the creative and critical analysis processes and will interpret art withing a personal, contemporary and historical context.

BTT1O:  Information & Communication Technology in Business & BTT1OF:  French Immersion Information & Communication Technology in Business

This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society.  Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet database, desktop publishing, presentation software and website design skills.  Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.

TIJ1O (TIJ1OA & TIJ1OB):  Exploring Technologies

This course enables students to further explore and develop technological knowledge and skills introduced in the elementary science and technology program.  Students will be given the opportunity to design and create products and/ or provide services related to the various technological areas or industries, working with a variety of tools, equipment and software commonly use din industry.  Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways leading to careers in technology-related fields.

18 Compulsory Credits:

 

4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)

3 credits in Mathematics (1 credit in Grade 11 or 12)

2 credits in Science

1 credit in Canadian History

1 credit in Canadian Geography

1 credit in the Arts

1 credit in Health and Physical Education

1 credit in French

0.5 credit in Career Studies + 0.5 credit in Civics

1 credit in Group 1: (choose from:  1 additional credit in French, a Native Language, First Nations, Metis and Inuit Studies, a classical or international language, a social science of humanities, a Canadian and world studies, a guidance or career education or Co-operative education.)

1 credit in Group 2: (choose from: 1 additional credit in health and physical education, the arts, business studies, French or Co-operative education)

1 credit in Group 3: (choose from:  1 additional credit in science (Grade 11 or 12), technological education, French, computer studies or Co-operative education).
