​Welcome, families, to the Greater Essex Virtual School! 

If your child will be learning online, we would like to recommend that you and your child know how to login to your child’s class before the first day. Our Virtual School uses Microsoft Teams for daily instruction. Edsby is used for parent communication. Please see below for some tips to make your family’s transition as smooth as possible. 

 

DEVICES 

Each child in your family who is attending Virtual School in the online program will need their own device as they will be engaging in online learning for most of the day.  

If you are using your own device, please ensure that it has the following free apps installed and working:  

Microsoft Teams, Microsoft OneNote, Edsby, Lexia (for Gr. 1-3, Junior RISE only), Lexia PowerUp (grade 5 only), Zorbits Math Adventure (Gr. K-3) and Flipgrid. 

If your device does not work with these apps, please call your home school principal to request a device from the GECDSB.  


 

LOGGING IN 

Prior to November 9th, please help your child practise logging into Office 365 and Microsoft Teams, using their student number and password. Attached to this message are step-by-step instructions for logging in, including the format for a student password. If you are unable to login, please contact technologysupport@publicboard.ca, or call (519) 987-6066, to have the password reset. 


 

SCHEDULE 

Our day begins at 9:00 am every day with announcements. Students should login to their class a few minutes early so they are ready to begin promptly at 9:00.  

We have two 15-minute breaks, one at 10:15 and one at 1:40, with a 40-minute lunch break at 11:45. 

JK/SK – 180 minutes of synchronous learning (live with the teacher) and 120 minutes of learning that may or may not require use of a device. 

Grades 1-8 – 225 minutes of synchronous learning (live with the homeroom teacher) and 75 minutes of asynchronous work that will often include working online independently or with peers. French as a Second Language instruction will also be scheduled for grades 4-8 during the 75-minute asynchronous block.

WEEK 1 (Introduction to Office 365 and Intro to Microsoft Teams)

 In this session, parents/guardians will learn about the basics of logging into their child’s Office 365 and navigating our main learning platform, Microsoft Teams. This will include a tutorial on Student ID and password combinations, access to the publicboard.ca Student portals, navigating Teams and the various apps within Office 365, and potential common login errors that can be anticipated. Parents/guardians can also expect to learn about Technology Support and when they can know to contact the Team.


 

WEEK 2 (Introduction to Edsby and Microsoft Teams continued)

In this session we will explore Edsby and dive a little deeper into Teams.  Parents/guardians will learn how to navigate inside their Edsby classroom, how to find their child’s online classroom, manage audio and video permissions, navigate the various tabs, apps, and channels, and send direct messages to teachers. Common problems/issues that can be encountered will also be discussed, along with their potential solutions.

WEEK 3 (Introduction to Class Notebook)

Parents/guardians will learn how to access and use Class Notebook in the third seminar. Class Notebook is a platform that allows students to work both independently and collaboratively with their class within an online space. Parents/guardians will be shown how to find assigned tasks in Notebook’s Sections and Pages, interact with the material that the teacher has attached, edit using the suite of tools available within the program, and troubleshoot some simple problems that Notebook can present. 

Homework Help!

The GECDSB is pleased to offer another layer of support to students and families in the Greater Essex Virtual School (GEVS). We will be piloting a Homework Help after school program, beginning on Monday, November 16th, 2020. The Homework Help pilot project will run until Tuesday, December 15th. Online support will be available each weekday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 Monday to Thursday. Students who require support or assistance with their homework can request the help by clicking the link below:

 

 

An after-school support teacher will contact the student as soon as possible to provide assistance.
