The staff and students at Vincent Massey have taken time to remember Massey graduate, Matt Rawlings. Matt passed away over the summer of 2012 after recently graduating from Massey. He was respected and well known around the school as a likeable, fun-loving young man with enormous potential.
As a former member of the boys hockey team at Massey, Matt is being remembered on new school jerseys bearing his initials for the 2012-2013 hockey season. The new jerseys were made possible through a donation from Parent Council (IMPAC). The team invited Matt's father to the season home opener where he addressed the team and performed the ceremonial puck drop. The Mustangs, coached by Mr. St. Pierre, Mr. Durocher and Mr. Charron, went on to win the game by a score of 8-5.
Matt's family has placed a bench painted in the school colours and bearing Matt's hockey number, 27 in Matt's honour outside of the Massey library. Donations may be made to help cover the cost of the bench and to start a bursary in Matt's name in the main office of the school. A canoe paddle signifying Matt's love of the outdoors has been painted by art teacher Mr. Horton and will be displayed prominently in the library of Massey to honour Matt's memory.
