Shakespeare in Action at Massey

On Thursday April 10, 2014, 250 students took part in Massey's first ever Shakespeare in Action Performances.  Shakespeare in Action is a group of actors from the Toronto area dedicated to making Shakespearean themes, storylines, and characters relatable to students in the present day.  At the performances, actors gave students an interactive history of Elizabethan England and discussed the conditions in which Shakespeare had to write.  Also, they discussed how Shakespeare was a genius with words as he created over 3000 words and numerous catch phrases, many of which are still in use today.  The actors also performed popular scenes from Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, and they had a segment with student volunteers presenting the ideas from these scenes in a more modern context for students to understand.  Students and teachers appreciated the enthusiastic approach that these actors had towards Shakespeare and his famous works.  Many students have indicated that their interest in this playwright has been heightened and they have adopted a new appreciation for Shakespeare and his classic tales of love, death, humour, and history.
