The Student of the Month for September is Kayla
Kuharski-Baker, a Grade 12 student at Belle River District High School.
Over the past few years, Kayla has volunteered for an
organization that provides assistance to residents in
impoverished countries. She helped with a building project in Costa Rica during
the summer of 2016. While she was there, she helped a team of volunteers built
barriers around homes to prevent flooding, helped out at the preschool and
cleaned up the beach. This past summer Kayla helped build a preschool and a
park in the country of Eswatini, Africa (formerly known as Swaziland). She also
helped local students with their English.
Kayla is passionate about volunteering to help others and
she is able to maintain a high academic average while dedicating much of her
time to community service and fundraising. Kayla has held two fundraisers for
Type 1 Diabetes which is something very
close to her heart. She has also held a fundraiser for Angelman Syndrome, a
condition her niece has. Kayla has volunteered at many events, kids camps, and
at the Unemployed Help Center. She just recently applied to help out at the
Downtown Mission once a week and she is very excited to start volunteering
there.
Congratulations Kayla for being selected by
Student Senate as the Student of the Month for September
