School Climate Survey 2016-2017

School Climate Survey 2017

The purpose of the school climate survey is to strengthen our system and our individual schools by celebrating our strengths, acknowledging our weaknesses and planning the next steps to ensure positive learning and working environments for everyone.

Data for the student and parent surveys conducted in the Winter of 2017 indicates:

  • The majority of students at the junior and intermediate level and the majority of parents feel that there is at least one friend and one adult to talk to at home or at school.
  • The majority of students at the junior and intermediate level feel good about themselves and like who they are.
  • The majority of students at the junior and intermediate level and parents feel welcome at school.
  • The majority of parents feel that the school clearly communicates how they can be involved and know where to access academic resources to support learning at home.

The survey results demonstrate a need to review:

  • Almost a quarter of the parents responding to the survey were not sure if their child had strategies to address bullying.
  • Almost half of the parents responding to the survey thought or were not sure if their child was verbally bullied/harassed within the past 4 weeks of the survey being taken.
  • A majority of the teachers thought that there are barriers that stand in the way of student learning because of an emotional or psychological challenge.

>  As a result of the school climate survey we will:

  • Review expectations and strategies with staff and students about how to respond to bullying.  Share these strategies with parents at a parent council meeting, our school website, and at an assembly
  • Review with students, staff, and parents, strategies to report bullying using a presentation, role playing, arrange to have a guest speaker share this message.
  • With the increased awareness of mental health, educate staff about how to respond to emotional or psychological challenges with their students.  Elicit the support of professionals in the community.
  • Encourage more responses to the parent survey via Synervoice, reminders home, agenda message, and at a parent council meeting.
