Community Planning & Partnership Meeting

Logo - GECDSB.jpgIn support of the Ontario Ministry of Education's Community Planning and Partnerships initiative, the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) will explore opportunities to share facilities with community partners.

The goal is to optimize the use of public assets owned by the GECDSB to benefit the Board, its students and the communities we serve.

Community organizations and the public are invited to attend a public meeting and information session on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the GECDSB Administrative Building (451 Park Street West, Windsor), to discuss potential planning and partnership opportunities in existing schools and co-build opportunities in schools (new, additions and significant renovations).

Labour Negotiations Updates

During the negotiations process the GECDSB will keep families and the community up to date with the most recent confirmed news and information on the Labour Negotiations 2019 section of this website.


October 6, 2019

A tentative agreement has been reached with employees represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Please refer to this: OPSBA News Release - Council of Trustees’ Associations (CTA) and the Provincial Government Reach a Tentative Agreement.
School and student transportation will proceed as usual on Monday, October 7th.​​

October 4, 2019

In the event of a strike on Monday, October 7th by GECDSB employees represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) EarlyON Centres​ operated by the City of Windsor at: Amherstburg PS, General Brock PS, Dougall PS, Harrow PS, Lakeshore Discovery School, M.D. Bennie PS, Princess Elizabeth PS, and Talbot Trail PS will be closed.
EarlyON Centres at: Roseville PS, John Campbell PS West Gate PS, Begley PS and Queen Elizabeth PS; will remain open.
​Day care centres and Latchkey programs will be open and operate as usual.

​October 3, 2019

All Greater Essex County District School Board schools will be open and student transportation will operate as usual on Monday, October 7th, regardless of the outcome of contract talks scheduled for this weekend on a new collective agreement for employees represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

GECDSB teachers, administrators and education support staff will still be in schools and a plan will be in place to maintain student safety and building operations in the absence of striking staff, should a work stoppage occur.

​October 2, 2019

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has officially served notice to the Crown and Council of Trustees Association that it will be escalating its legal job action to a full withdraw of services as of October 7, 2019 if a new collective agreement has not been reached.

The GECDSB remains hopeful that bargaining will continue and a settlement can be secured before the deadline.

However we are developing contingency plans in the event of a work stoppage by CUPE employees*.

Clear and timely communication with our school communities is a priority. Our website – and social media platforms (Twitter - @GECDSBPRO Facebook – Gecdsb Greater Essex County District School Board) will have updates when there is new information to share.

​September 30, 2019

The legal job action undertaken by Canadian Union of Public Employees representing GECDSB custodial, maintenance, clerical and information technology staff has necessitated a pause on all Community Use of Schools rental permits, effective Tuesday, October 1, 2019.​
The Job Action includes the withdrawal of certain duties which are essential to the safe use of our schools by community groups.

September 27, 2019

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that they would begin a legal job action in support of their collective bargaining position across Ontario on Sept. 30, 2019. 

CUPE members in the Greater Essex County District School Board include custodial and maintenance employees, school-based and central clerical staff as well as information technology personnel. 

No other union or federation has indicated job action at this time. 

Schools will remain open, with health and safety as a key priority. Childcare centres, and before and after-school programs will also remain open.​

​Student safety is a key priority and we will do everything we can to minimize the impact of job action on students and families. We are closely monitoring negotiations and hope all parties can reach fair, mutually acceptable agreements as quickly as possible. We commit to providing you with up-to-date information in a timely manner. ​
