RE: Extracurricular Activities

Last week, several of the local school boards agreed to follow the recommendations of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, and will enact procedures to limit participation in extracurricular activities for only those students, staff, officials and volunteers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Once the policies/procedures have been formalized, the Boards will work together with the Windsor Essex County Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WECSSAA) on determining which sports may be able to proceed based on the amount of time in the season, on the number of students who would be eligible to participate, and the number of coaches who will be available. A timeline for return to play will vary depending on all of these factors.

To further support a safe return to extracurricular activities, WECSSAA and its member boards have decided to play regionally among schools in Windsor and Essex County with the primary focus on re-engaging our students in athletics. High schools will not participate in SWOSSAA and OFSAA competitions, but will follow return to play protocols of each organization, including those of the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association.

the above is an excerpt from a joint statement from Windsor-Essex Catholic District School
Board, the Greater Essex County District School Board, Conseil scolaire catholique Providence,
Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Windsor Essex County Secondary Schools Athletic
Association.

Truth and Reconciliation Week

Residential schools were church-run schools where approximately 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nations children were sent between the 1860s and the 1990s. The schools harmed Indigenous children by removing them from their families, forcing them to speak English or French instead of their ancestral languages, disconnecting them from their culture and traditions and forcing them to adopt Christianity in order to assimilate into Canadian society. The government has since acknowledged that this approach was wrong, cruel and ineffective, and offered an official apology to the Indigenous people of Canada in 2008.  (https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/what-is-orange-shirt-day)

Thursday is Orange Shirt Day Wear an orange shirt on Thursday, September 30th.  The Orange shirt is a reminder that “Every Child Matters”. Orange Shirt Day was started by Phyllis Webstad to educate people about residential schools and to fight racism and bullying.

School Council Meeting

We would like to encourage and invite all parents to become active members of the School Council

Each parent/guardian of a student enrolled at the school for the current year is eligible both to vote and to run as a parent/guardian representative. The purpose of school councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.

The first School Council meeting of the 2021-22 school year will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.  The meeting will be virtual and a TEAMS invite will be sent to parent/guardians who request an invite.  Please send an Edsby message with your email address or please me email me at desreen.burnett@publicboard.ca.  The meeting will be approximately 1 hour and will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Elections for the positions of Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer will be held in October.

We hope to see you all soon (virtually)!

Bring Your Own Device

Green Griffins,

Many of our students have their own device and we did not collect devices from our students. Students are allowed and encouraged to bring their own device to school daily to allow access to digital learning tools. Students can bring their own personal device or one that was loaned to them by the GECDSB for distance learning. The GECDSB has set up a link on the website for parents/guardians to purchases devices through board approved vendors. (Student Device Purchase Options).

If a student would like to request a device, please contact the school or send an Edsby message to our Attendance Secretary (Tiffany Hodgins). Please note that requests are fulfilled once devices become available.

Thank you Griffins!

Welcome Back Message

Good afternoon,

Registration fees have been waived for the 2021-2022 school year. All students will have access to their timetable via Edsby. This is controlled by the IT department and hopefully will be released at some point after Friday. All students will receive a hardcopy of their timetable on the first day of school, in their first class.

Students who have not returned textbooks and/or other school equipment are asked to do so on the first day of school.

We will be sharing the Bell schedule and the Board calendar soon. In the meantime, please review and return the paperwork that was mailed to you in July (with the report card).  For example, the Photo Consent form and the Verification of Registration and Health Information form needs to be completed/updated and signed.

Please note: Students entering grade 9 will receive the paperwork mentioned above on the first day of school. Please ensure the information is accurate, including your email address, etc. and then have your child return the forms to school.  We will invite you to join our Board/School Edsby group.  Currently, we rely heavily on Edsby as a means of communicating Board and school information.

Please email (mail to: mailto:tiffany.hodgins@publicboard.ca) or fax all completed forms back to us; or they can be returned on the first day of School.  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

We are eager to see our returning students/parents and we look forward to meeting all new students/parents!  If you have any questions, please call the school at (519) 944-4700.

Take care,

D. Burnett
