Kingsville Junior Gardeners!
The Kingsville Horticultural Society delivered gardening kits in May to all of our Junior Gardeners.  All tolled, 100 children signed up to the program, of which 15 were Kingsville P.S. students.

The attached photo shows what they received in their gardening kits.  There's everything they need to Plant a Rainbow Garden in a little 4 X 4 foot garden plot.
  • instruction booklet
  • youth membership card to the Kingsville Horticultural Society (how many 5 year olds do you know who can boast that they officially belong to a horticultural society?)
  • 3 liatris bulbs (these attract butterflies!)
  • 3 Heirloom Delicious tomato plant seedlings (these will grow BIG)
  • lemon cucumber seeds
  • sugar lace peas
  • Royal burgundy beans
  • Baby Boo mini white pumpkin seeds
  • Starfire marigold seeds
  • Moody Blues nigella seeds
  • Rainbow Swiss chard seeds
  • Scarlet Nantes carrot seeds
The kids were so excited to get their gardening kits, and The society representative had a nice chat with many of the parents who have been so enthusiastic about the program.  Many emails came from parents who thanked us for offering a program that gets the kids outdoors during this lockdown, to learn new skills, and take part in an activity that the family can do together.

All in all,  we couldn't be more pleased with the response to the program for our first year.  We plan to offer the program each year going forward.  It's such a good way for us to engage with our community,  and hopefully we are "growing gardeners".

Keep Dax and Family in your Thoughts. . .

From the Windsor Star:

A Harrow family is hoping for a second miracle in their young son’s life after the 11-year-old was diagnosed a week ago with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Dax Rounding is undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre after being rushed there via ambulance from Windsor on Saturday.

Parents Dan Rounding and Michelle Hoekstra are taking separate 24-hour shifts by his side, due to hospital regulations around the COVID-19 pandemic, putting an extra strain on the normally exuberant young athlete.

The boy’s uncle, Don Rounding, who lives in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., described him as a fighter.

“Dax is having a hard time with not having his parents together with him,” Don said, adding the hospital and staff have been phenomenal. “It’s very hard for him and Dan and Michelle are very distraught about this.”

Once Dax, a student in the French immersion program at Kingsville public school who loves and excels at sports, is released from hospital, he will have to return regularly for further appointments and treatments for at least two and a half years, Don said.

“There’s going to be a lot of expenses going back and forth to London. Someone’s going to always be off work to take him there.”

So Don, along with his cousins Jill (Rounding) Carrier and Rex Rounding, started a GoFundMe page called Dax’s Army Against Lymphoma.

They exceeded their $10,000 fundraising goal in less than eight hours, Don said.

The goal has since been raised to $25,000 now that the family knows how long Dax’s treatment will take.

“This is what the GoFundMe is going to help out, making him and his family as comfortable as possible while they’re going through this horrific change in life,” Don said.
