Random Act of Kindness Week
Riverside Secondary School Spreads Kindness
November 1st to November 7th

November 1st marked the kickoff to Riverside’s Random Act of Kindness week, better known as RAK Week. As a school that is known to go above and beyond what is required, Riverside’s Student Parliament decided to extend Random Act of Kindness Day, which was November 1st, to a week of helping the community in and out of the school. After countless hours of preparation, everything was in order for RAK Week to begin.

On November 1st, Riverside’s Student Parliament participated in a community clean up, gathering over five bags of garbage. On the 2nd, along with the student senate, they volunteered at the Unemployment Help Centre, helping with their “Coats for Kids” drive. Not only did they sort coats, but they helped people find sizes, helped to display the coats and ensured that everyone was able to get a coat. Ivan Ruvinov stated: “Seeing them take the coats I donated is such a good feeling.” On the 3rd they made edible arrangements for custodians, secretaries and teachers at Riverside, which tied into the 4th when they surprised the staff with the arrangements and a card thanking them for all that they do. On the 5th, Parliament students volunteered at Science City, where they organized files, cleaned, rearranged furniture, and helped to prepare some of the exhibits for the lessons provided by Science City. On the 6th, they dressed in formal wear and complimented people around the school in hopes of bettering someone’s day. Finally, on the 7th, Student Parliament volunteered at the Humane Society, where they helped to sort out all the merchandise that was recently donated for the animals.

Through these simple acts of kindness, it is clear that Riverside’s Student Parliament had a big impact on the community around them and made a difference in other people’s lives.
