Entering its sixth summer in July 2020, the Reaching Ahead program has helped hundreds of students make the transition from grade 8 to grade 9 with new skills and confidence.
This free program allows students to learn more about the world of work, what to expect in high school, and how to get involved in their community. Students who successfully complete the course also earn their first full high school credit.
Students attend classes from 8:30 to 12:30 each weekday, and then complete an additional two hours of online work at their own pace from home. The online work typically focuses on extending the learning from each morning and allows students to become more familiar with the growing field of eLearning. The availability and locations of each class are determined by the enrolment throughout the county.
The Reaching Ahead program is offered, whenever possible, at GECDSB secondary schools. However, there are times when summer construction projects prevent the program from running in certain locations.
Registration for this course will begin in the spring of 2020 via the myBlueprint online course selection and pathway planning software platform. Out of board students will be able to complete and submit a hard-copy application to the Summer School offices before the May 29th deadline. Please note that placement in the program cannot be guaranteed after the registration deadline.

What did students from July 2019 say about the course?
“The reaching ahead program in my mind was a great idea to do, to get my first full credit and was an amazing learning experience to get myself prepared and ready for high school. Some things I enjoyed about the course was the fact knowing that this was going to set me up for high school really well and help me out in the future and it will hopefully give me the felling satisfaction after finishing the course. The most valuable lesson from this course would be now knowing how I should manage my time in high school, knowing to not spend all my time doing homework or being on my phone, learning to go out of my comfort zone more often and to meet new people in my community.”
“The thing that I enjoyed most about participating in this class was getting a head start on the whole high school experience. I find it amazing how in just a few weeks we were able to get a full high school credit. I also made some friends during the completion of this course and am excited to go to high school with even more friends than I had when I graduated. The thing that I found most valuable in this course was the assignments we had to complete.”
“I actually really enjoyed this course. I was wary at first due to this course taking up half of my summer, and I believed that it would be a waste of my time. But I considered the pros and cons and decided that it would probably be best for me in the end if I were to take this course. I was right. This course taught me a lot about high school, jobs and much more. I learned a lot more about high school than I initially knew. I really enjoyed how the school day was only half of a regular school day.”
