School history

  • David Maxwell Public School was constructed in 1928 and officially opened on January 3, 1929.  The school was named in honour of Dr. David A. Maxwell M.A. Ph.D.
  • The original building consisted of 13 classrooms with a gymnasium, offices and a nurse's room.  Due to a tremendous increase in student population the structure known as "The Bungalows" began construction on October 26, 1950.  The building was occupied on April 9, 1951 and housed the Kindergarten classes.  On January 18, 1951 construction began on two more classrooms.  On September 24, 1951 this addition was occupied by Grade 1 classes.  This building is currently known as Ska:Na Day Care.
  • On February 15, 1955 construction began on a four room addition at the south end of the existing building.  These rooms were occupied on September 6, 1955.
  • On Sunday, February 27, 1983 at approximately 8 pm., a fire erupted in the offices and lobby area.  Damage was estimated at $50,000.
  • 2020 Construction began to update David Maxwell's interior and exterior.
  • David Maxwell school always holds high the fine standards so ably exemplified by the late Dr. David A. Maxwell M.A. PhD.           There have been many outstanding teachers and students who have passed through this school.
  • We are home of the Mustangs.

Allergies and foods/scents restrictions

We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all students and staff. Learn about our allergy alerts, including restrictions on sending certain types of foods and scents with your child to school.

We are a Nut Aware school.  We are also a Scent-Free school.

Bullying prevention and intervention

Here at Maxwell, we use our hands and feet to help people, not to hurt them and we use words that are uplifting, not to bring people down.

The GECDSB's Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan outlines our long-term, school-wide approach regarding bullying prevention and intervention, including:

  • Education, awareness and outreach
  • Bullying and cyber-bullying
  • Types of behaviour and evaluation of evidence
  • Policies and procedures
  • Approved strategies and programs
  • Goals and action plans
