School history

Historic BellThe historic school bell made is debut appearance in 1862, atop a new two-room schoolhouse at the top of Bathhurst Street, on Richmond Street.  Previous to that time, the students were educated in a log cabin the size of which is unknown.

To accommodate the growing educational needs of the community, a second story was added to the Richmond Street school in 1881 and the bell was proudly hoisted to the roof to continue its daily beckoning to the students.

In 1910 when segregation was abolished, Amherstburg children once again needed larger facilities  and a new Amherstburg Public School was built on the same property.  The beloved bell was included in the architectural plans and continued to toll the start of the school day until 1967 when the building was vacated for the present, modern school.

At that time the bell was put into storage with plans to have it cleaned and mounted somewhere in this new building in the near future.  Years passed and the bell was forgotten.

On May 8, 1993, the P.T.A. resurrected and remounted the original school bell on a pedestal of bricks from the 1910 building to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the building on Hamilton Drive.
